IIT Kanpur, Convention Hall, Kanpur

Area: 4,500 sq. ft

Location: Kanpur

Status: Competition

The design situates itself within the larger modernist traditions that define the IIT Kanpur campus identity. The architecture for the new facility further extrapolates and celebrates the pioneering experiments carried out at the campus in contextualizing the modern within the harsh summer sun in the North Indian plains.

The design recognizes the immediate context of the existing auditorium, with its strong architectural character and materiality representative of the prevalent built traditions of IIT Kanpur campus. The architectural intervention aims to transform the stand-alone auditorium to a state of the art convention centre befitting the stature of a premier internationally renowned institution without bodily altering the built-form of the existing building.
